Is your family ready for the new school year? Communicating with your child's school is one of the most important ways to support your child's education. Here are some suggested questions to ask their new teacher:

Practical Questions

  • What is your preferred method of contact?
  • What is the dismissal policy?
  • How do I inform you or the school if my child has to be absent?
  • Are there any restrictions on bringing food to school?
  • Is there a parent or student handbook?


  • How do you assess my child’s learning style and how do you nurture this in your daily lessons?
  • How is academic progress measured in your class?
  • What are the most important (content-related) ideas my child needs to understand by the end of the year?

Parent Support

  • What do you need from me as a parent?
  • If my child is struggling, how will your respond? What can I do to help to support them?
  • If my child has more advanced homework material, how can I still help?
  • Can I call you if my child needs help with homework?
  • Where can I find the best resources to support my child in the classroom?
  • What kind of questions should I ask my child on a daily basis about your class?
  • How do I learn about parent activities?

Special Needs
